A new name, a new look...

Media Literacy Week, formerly National Media Education Week, was renamed this year to broaden its scope and raise awareness among Canadians that helping kids become media literate isn’t the sole responsibility of the education sector. The Media Literacy Week Web site also welcomes a fresh new look.

The theme...

This year’s theme – Media Literacy in the Digital Age – emphasizes the many different literacy skills needed by today’s youth for accessing, evaluating, repurposing, creating and distributing digital content.

Sponsorship…

Media Awareness Network and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation are proud to welcome back Bell and the Entertainment Software Association of Canada as this year’s Silver Sponsors. We also welcome Open Text and the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association as Bronze Sponsors.

The Government of Canada is also providing funding to Media Literacy Week this year.

Media education in action...

Featured events

Events to celebrate the week are taking place in schools and communities across Canada. Here’s how the Segal Centre in Montreal and Simon Fraser University in Vancouver will be marking Media Literacy Week 2009:

Media Literacy in the Classroom: A workshop for educators

On October 30, the Segal Centre invites elementary teachers from Montreal to join in a training opportunity. This one-day professional development program will help teachers learn innovative ways to incorporate the Quebec education competencies for media literacy into their classrooms. The workshop costs $65+ tax and includes a light lunch.

Reimaging Citizenship: A digital literacies symposium for youth media producers

From November 2-6, Simon Fraser University will be hosting a week-long series of workshops at its Harbour Centre campus; these workshops are designed for youth who are video producers and will be led by writers, educators and activists. The symposium will consider how ideas of citizenship and social justice can be explored throughout the digital media production process.

Featured educators and youth

photoThis section spotlights innovative educators and youth who are making media education happen. This week’s featured educator is Kym Stewart, a PhD student in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Kym’s doctoral work has looked at how to imaginatively engage children in an examination of their media culture and to create lesson plans that are culturally inclusive. As part of this work, she studied the effectiveness of transformative media education in public elementary schools in the primarily First Nations community of Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands.
