National Media Education Week 2008 Youth Event
Addressing Young People’s Unethical Online Activities and Behaviours

October 29, 2008 (Ottawa) – Media Awareness Network (MNet), the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) and Historica’s Encounters with Canada will host a youth event to celebrate National Media Education Week in Ottawa on November 5, 2008.

The goal of National Media Education Week (November 3-7) is to promote media literacy activities in homes, schools and communities across Canada. This year’s theme—Think Critically, Act Ethically: Inside and Outside the Classroom—encourages young people to be ethical and responsible online citizens.

At the event, youth attending Historica’s Encounters Canada forum will present public service announcements they have created to address unethical activities and behaviours on the Internet, such as harassment and bullying, hacking, illegal downloading, plagiarism and identity theft. The youth will also present a “Code of Ethics” for their schools to encourage peers and younger students to behave ethically online.

The event, which marks the third year for National Media Education Week, will take place on Wednesday, November 5, 2008.
