Ottawa launch event

Media Awareness Network, Canadian Teachers’ Federation and Historica-Dominion Institute’s Encounters with Canada will launch Media Literacy Week with a panel discussion in Ottawa about the impact of digital media on news gathering. News Gathering in the Digital Age will include panellists Andrew Cohen, award-winning journalist, best-selling author and President of the Historica-Dominion Institute; Scott Rubin, head of policy communications at YouTube; Roger Dubois, video-journalist for CBC.ca; Althia Raj, National Bureau reporter for Sun Media; and moderator  Daniel Bouchard, news anchor for Radio-Canada and communications professor at University of Ottawa.

Students from across the country who are participating in the Encounters with Canada youth forum will participate in the discussion. There will be a live Webcast of the event.

The following events will take place in Vancouver and Montreal during Media Literacy Week:

Panel Discussion Featuring Montreal Media Personalities

On November 3 the English Montreal School Board is hosting a discussion panel moderated by Steve Kowch, a graduate of Rosemount High School and the news and program director at CJAD Radio. The panel will include Montreal media personalities Chantal Desjardins, co-host of The Rush, Virgin Radio 96 FM’s drive home show and Mitch Melnick, host of the talk show Team990.

Remixing Pop Culture

On November 6 Pacific Cinémathèque will be screening RIP: A remix manifesto, a documentary film about copyright and remix culture, at the Vancouver Public Library. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion.

Featured educators and youth

This week our featured educator is Dr. Steven Van Zoost, a teacher at Avon View High School in Windsor, Nova Scotia.

Dr. Steven Van ZoostSteven, who teaches film and video production, advanced English and theory of knowledge, was awarded a 2009 Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence. Steven has been a constant innovator over his 15-year teaching career and has been a pathfinder in integrating new technology into the classroom, including Moodle, software for producing Internet-based courses and Web sites that emphasize collaboration and building on students’ ideas to inform learning.
