October 19-21, 2007 - Montreal, QC - ReDefining Media: Media Democracy and Community Radio Conference

CKUT 90.3 FM presents a free public conference entitled ReDefining Media: Media Democracy and Community Radio at McGill University in Montreal. The conference will include a keynote presentation and two days of workshops and panels. October 19, 2007 - Montreal, QC – Change the Future! Citizen Engagement via Media and the Web

October 20, 2007 – Toronto, ON – Rethinking Media Literacy Practices for the K-10 Classroom

October 22-28, 2007 - Moncton, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver - Get Animated!

October 28 is World Animation Day. To mark the occasion, the National Film Board of Canada will present Get Animated! with screenings of recent films, fascinating workshops, and a chance to meet filmmakers and discover animation in all its forms. Free activities are taking place in Moncton, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver.

London Public Library presents an information session entitled Facebook and MySpace.com. October 27, 2007 - Peterborough, ON - Cyber Bullying: Encouraging ethical online behaviour

Media Awareness Network presents Cyber Bullying: Encouraging ethical online behaviour as the keynote speech at the conference Safe and Successful Students in the Twenty-first Century hosted by the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board. The presentation offers strategies for educators on how to help young people develop responsible online behaviour and strike a balance between freedom of expression and creating an environment in which children feel free from harassment. October 28, 2007 – Winnipeg, MB – Freeze Frame at Get Animated!

October 28 is World Animation Day! Want to learn more about animation and how it¹s made? As part of the National Film Board’s Get Animated, Freeze Frame will host an animation table at Cinematheque on Sunday October 28 between 2- 4pm. Come join Freeze Frame for an exciting afternoon of hands-on animation with Education Coordinator Justin Ouimet.

November 1 - 4, 2007 — Edmonton, AB - 26th Edmonton Global Visions Documentary Film Festival

Inspired by Gandhi's words, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world," this year's documentaries at the Edmonton Global Visions Documentary Film Festival will explore opportunities for individuals in Canada and around the world to embark upon actions that can make a difference.

November 2, 2007 – Calgary, AB - TRUE YOUth awareness launch

TRUE YOUth is a grassroots marketing campaign. Last summer they recruited young people to participate in the Youth Media Advisory Group (YMAG). The YMAG the "I just want to say something contest", in which they challenged young people to submit entries to break down stereotypes and promote positive images of youth.

Over the summer, the winners partook in an internship with Focus Consulting to professionally produce their own PSAs. On Friday, TRUE YOUth will be launching the PSAs and featuring the amazing work of the Youth Media Advisory Group. The electronic and print PSAs will be playing at Cineplex Odeon theatres for a five week period.

November 2-3, 2007 – Winnipeg, MB – Global Justice Film Festival

The purpose of the Global Justice Film Festival is to call together people who are curious about and/or committed to the care of creation an the necessity for global peace and justice; and to engage them in a dialogue and information sharing through the use of films, displays and print information.

The Global Justice Film Festival features films from the ‘Travelling World Community Film Festival,’ a project of the World Community Development Education Society.

November 5, 2007 – Ottawa, ON – National Media Education Week 2007, Opening Ceremonies

Media Awareness Network and the Canadian Teachers’ Federation are pleased to invite you to the opening ceremonies for National Media Education Week 2007. In recognition of the week, there will be a launch of a new French-language “e-Parenting” online tutorial – Devenir e-Parent: un tutoriel pour suivre vos enfants en ligne. November 5 – June 14, 2007 – Ottawa, ON – Show What You Know Media Literacy Contest (National)

Hey kids…create a multi-media project on sustainable livelihoods and win prizes.

A sustainable livelihood is having the skills, knowledge, resources that will enable families to have an income which will sustain them through the ebbs and flows of life – allowing them to have assets and savings to manage emergencies and crises that they encounter, such as illness in the family.

The contest is hosted by the CHF (formerly Canadian Hunger Foundation). Your final submission will explore the theme of sustainable livelihoods in the regions serviced by CHF which include Ghana, Vietnam or Zimbabwe. You will decide which media you will use to express your ideas. Creativity counts, so get your thinking caps on and start producing!

November 5-9, 2007 – Toronto, ON – Youth Generated Media

Inspired by National Media Education Week, CITIZENShift and GlobalAware are inviting uploads of youth generated media to the CITIZENShift Web site.

Using the power of film and photography along with Web based tools such as blogs and podcasts, CITIZENShift engages people to explore key social issues and to be a part of an ever growing online community. Similarly, GlobalAware uses photography in the forms of buttons, posters and postcards to engage individuals in social justice and environmental issues.

User upload is a great new feature on CITIZENShift’s newly revamped site. By uploading your creative work to CitizenShift, links and sparks can be jump-started to create connections and build community. November 6, 2007 – Toronto, ON – Your Voice - Is the media the message? Getting kids to think critically

Your Voice, live Tuesdays at 1 pm ET at tvoparents.com, is an online interactive parenting show. The show provides expert, real-time advice on how parents and caregivers can help their kids navigate the issues they face at school.

On November 6, Your Voice host Cheryl Jackson, welcomes guests Linda Millar, an educational consultant and workshop facilitator with Concerned Children's Advertisers; and Neil Anderson, teacher, author, consultant and executive member of the Association for Media Literacy. They will help parents understand what media literacy is and why our children need to become media literate.

Media Awareness Network presents Cyber Bullying: Encouraging ethical online behaviour at the Safe Schools Conference hosted by the Alberta Association of School Resource Officers. The workshop explores the pervasiveness of online bullying, why the Internet is such an effective tool for harassment, and the role of the victim, perpetrator and bystander in cyberspace.

GlobalAware.org provides classroom resources for media education. They create buttons, posters, postcards, and photography designed to engage people in social, ecological, and media issues. Lighthouse Publishing presents local media specialists in a newspaper feature and online forum. November 6, 2007 – Toronto, ON - Feature Film and Popular Culture: Stories for the Classroom

If you are between the ages of 13 and 30, and would like to discuss ideas about how you can positively impact your community: you and your friends are invited to a free screening of the documentary film The Merchants of Cool and take part in a group discussion at the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce YMCA teen zone. Snacks will be provided.

The Merchants of Cool – An introduction to the genre of persuasion, this film examines the complex ways in which the marketing industry targets young adults with messages of consumption.

November 8-9, 2007 - Vancouver, BC - Personal Landscapes: Free fieldtrip to Pacific Cinémathèque

The Pacific Cinémathèque, in partnership with the British Columbia Association for Media Educators, presents two highly engaging workshops on the theme of 'Personal Landscapes' for secondary students and teachers across the Lower Mainland.

  • Morning Workshop (9:00 am - 11:30 am)
    Award-winning filmmaker Nettie Wild will screen clips selected from her films-A Rustling of Leaves, Blockade, A Place Called Chiapas and Fix: the Story of an Addicted City-and host a discussion about the role of filmmaker as artist and social commentator.
  • Afternoon Workshop (12:30 pm - 3:00 pm)
    A screening of clips relating to landscapes from a spectrum of youth-produced, independent, and mainstream media will be integrated with discussions on the power of personal interpretation.

November 15, 2007 - Montreal, QC - Deadline for the Unite Against Aids Video Contest (National)

IndieMV, in support of UNICEF Canada, is giving Canadians the opportunity to creatively express their views about HIV and AIDS through music and video. Today's students have grown up wired and wireless, surrounded by texts unimagined by most of us when this university (University of Saskatchewan) was founded. What do these changes in text forms mean for education? Are we immigrants or citizens in this new world of literacies? How will we support young people in our schools and homes so that they will become a literate citizenry?

The nightly TV news broadcast remains the single most influential source of political information among citizens of western democracies. The complex events of the entire world are distilled into just over 20 minutes of prime-time material. What happens as the muddy realities of the day are boiled down and purified into neat and distinct news items? How do news professionals come to represent our worlds through organizational, professional, economic, ideological, and political filters? How do they represent reality? What is laundered out? November 22, 2007 - London, ON - Media Violence: Truth Or Consequences (Grades 7 - 10)

London Public Library hosts Media Violence: Truth Or Consequences (Grades 7 - 10) presented by Shari Graydon. On TV, at the movies, in video games and music lyrics, violence is glamorized as entertaining and inevitable, integral to sport and only resolved through more violence. November 22, 2007 - London, ON - 7 Habits Of Savvy Media Watchers (Grades 3 - 7)

London Public Library hosts 7 Habits Of Savvy Media Watchers (Grades 3 - 7) presented by Shari Graydon. This presentation helps younger students to identify and think critically about all forms of media persuasion - from TV commercials and celebrity endorsements to brand names and insecurity appeals. Along the way, it equips them with tools to unpack the subtleties of ambiguous language and sophisticated imagery. Contact: London Public Library

November 23, 2007 – Winnipeg, MB - So Many Subtitles, So Little Time

So Many Subtitles, So Little Time is presented by Kevin Nikkel at the Manitoba Association of Teachers of English (MATE) conference Hands On Learning: Practical Approaches for the ELA Classroom. This seminar makes a case for using foreign subtitled films in the high school English classroom. Watching movies is more than something to pass the time; take advantage of these films to explore literacy and multiculturalism. Recommended films and related print resources will be presented.

November 23, 2007 – Winnipeg, MB – Integration of Media in the Classroom

Integration of Media in the Classroom is presented by Freeze Frame International Film Festival for Kids of All Ages at the conference Exploring Possibilities and Engaging Ideas hosted by the Manitoba Association for Cooperative Learning Teachers (MACLT). This workshop introduces the basics of video production and its integration in the curriculum; it gives educators the opportunity to learn how video production and film analysis can be tied into classroom work; and how it can be used as a tool to better understand concepts and subject matter.

Media Awareness Network presets Media Education: Make It Happen! at the Media Literacy Conference hosted by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association. Media Education: Make It Happen! introduces educators to the key principals of media education and provides strategies on how to facilitate media literacy in the classroom. The session will also review the new media literacy strand in the elementary and secondary Ontario Language curriculum, connecting student learning expectations with strategies and free resources available on the Media Awareness Network Web site.
